Student complaints (fictional!)
The following is a list of student complaints (fictional!) about their course and university facilities made at a student course review meeting. The students were asked to provide feedback on the operation of their course. This information will be used to provide a written report for the Head of Division.
Group the different complaints into sections that you could use in a report and suggest a possible structure for the report.
- Friday mornings - not fair to ask students to attend for a 50 minute lecture.
- main lecture theatre - poorly ventilated.
- Lectures cancelled without prior warning
- One hour per week not enough for computer class.
- lack of lighting on campus after dark.
- Not given enough prior information on timing of assignments
- 9 o'clock lectures on Monday mornings.
- Poor quality screen and whiteboard in main lecture theatre.
- Large groups - nearly 100 in lectures. Students at back have difficulties seeing the screens and hearing the lecturer.
- Too few copies of set texts in Library
- Expensive beer and lager in the Students' Union.
- Industrial visits arranged were of no interest or relevance to the course.
- Lack of sufficient handouts with lectures.
- Overcrowded classrooms - not enough chairs when everyone present.
- High cost of food in student canteens.
- Parking! Who does get a permit.
- Some lecturers unapproachable and/or difficult to get hold of.
- Slow return of marked assignments.
- Difficulty of access to computers within the department.
- Penalties for late submission not made clear.
- Induction week poorly organised. Lots of wasted time spent hanging around.
- Too many assignments given at the same time.
- Not many relevant books in the Library. Lots out of date.
- Briefs for assignments not always clear.
- Students without A Level mathematics having a number of difficulties with the course.
