Make sure all your sentences are complete - 'Also the effects of the recession' is not a full sentence. You could re-write the sentence like this:
Another problem is the effect of the recession.

The trainee was described as lazy and aggressive and when the foreman disciplined him he threatened to smash his brains in. The Personnel Officer asked him to give him another chance.
Who threatened to smash whose brains in? Who was the Personnel Officer referring to when he asked to 'give him another chance'?. This sentence is confusing as it is not clear who is being referred to.
